Getting Your Head Right
What you should know before diving into investment education
Most people show up wanting to learn tactics. Buy this, sell that, watch these charts. But here's the thing—tactics without the right mindset are like building a house on sand.
We've been teaching investment thinking since 2019, and every year we see the same pattern. Students who rush in without proper mental preparation hit walls they didn't see coming. Not because they lack intelligence, but because nobody told them what this journey actually requires.
This isn't about scaring you off. It's about setting honest expectations so you can succeed when you do start.
Three Things Nobody Mentions
Before you commit time and energy to learning about markets and money, let's talk about what actually matters.
Patience Isn't Optional
You'll need months—not weeks—to develop solid thinking patterns. The students who stick around for autumn 2025 cohorts understand this going in. Quick wins exist, but building real capability takes longer than TikTok suggests.
Comfort With Uncertainty
Markets don't follow rules the way physics does. You can do everything right and still lose money in the short term. If you need guaranteed outcomes and clear right answers, this field will frustrate you endlessly.
Emotional Regulation
Watching your money fluctuate triggers reactions you didn't know you had. Successful investors aren't fearless—they've just learned to make decisions despite the fear. That's a skill you build, not something you're born with.
We cover all this in our programs, but you should start thinking about it now. Self-awareness before education saves a lot of headaches.
Darian Keough
Lead Program Coordinator
I started at Xelventryl in 2021 after spending five years watching people make the same preventable mistakes in their personal finances. What struck me wasn't their lack of knowledge—it was their lack of preparation for what learning actually involves.
Now I spend most of my time helping prospective students figure out if they're genuinely ready. Not ready in terms of money or time—ready mentally. Because I've seen brilliant people quit halfway through when reality didn't match their expectations. And I've seen average folks succeed because they came in with their eyes open.
My job isn't to convince you to sign up. It's to help you make an honest assessment so if you do join us, you're set up to finish what you start. That's why we created this page—because the conversation about readiness needs to happen before tuition gets paid.
What Preparation Actually Looks Like
Four concrete steps you can take before our next intake opens in September 2025.
Track Your Reactions to Money News
For the next month, notice how you feel when you hear about market drops or gains. Do you get anxious? Excited? Indifferent? Write it down. Understanding your default responses helps you recognize them later when real money is involved.
This isn't therapy—it's data collection about yourself. Most people never do this, then wonder why they panic-sell at the worst times.
Read Something Boring
Pick up a basic finance book. Not an exciting one about cryptocurrency millionaires—something dry about index funds or bonds. If you can't get through it, that tells you something important about whether you'll enjoy this field.
Investment education involves reading annual reports and financial statements. These documents were not designed for entertainment.
Test Your Discipline
Set a small goal completely unrelated to money. Exercise three times weekly, or read for 20 minutes daily. Stick to it for eight weeks. Successful investing requires following your strategy even when you don't feel like it. Practice that skill now in a low-stakes environment.
Calculate Your Real Available Time
Be brutally honest. How many hours per week can you actually dedicate to learning? Not how many you wish you had—how many you realistically have after work, family, and basic life maintenance. Our autumn program requires roughly 6-8 hours weekly. If you don't have that, don't sign up yet. Wait until you do.
When You're Actually Ready
If you've worked through the preparation steps and still feel drawn to this, that's a good sign. It means you're approaching it seriously rather than impulsively.
Our next comprehensive program launches in September 2025. That gives you several months to build the mental foundation that makes everything else easier. Some people need that time. Others are already there.
Either way, the honest self-assessment matters more than rushing to enroll.
